Service Women’s Action Network Survey Finds 30% Infertility Rate

The 2018 survey by Service Women’s Action Network of almost 800 active duty, National Guard, reservists, retirees and veterans, found that 30% of the women surveyed struggled to conceive a child. For Active Duty respondents, the number who reported infertility was 37%. That compares with 12% in the general population or one in eight couples.

This sample of our community suggests that the struggles of infertility are a significant challenge for military families and are likely greatly under-reported and misunderstood. (Hence, why we founded this organization!)

Not surprisingly, the report recommends full coverage and funding for infertility care for servicewomen.

At Military Family Building Coalition we are proud to support the work of SWAN and other military family organizations who have led the way to keep issues affecting our military front and center.

About the Service Women’s Action Network

SWAN is a national, nonpartisan organization and member-driven community network advocating for the individual and collective needs of service women and women veterans. To date, SWAN has played a major role in opening all military jobs to service women, holding sex offenders accountable in the military justice system, eliminating barriers to disability claims for those who have experienced military sexual trauma, and expanding access to a broad range of reproductive health and mental wellness services for military women.
